So the heyday for wedge-heeled shoes was the '70s? Think again. Wedges, boots and booties with the typical straight-through heel have not only become more varied since then but also much more sophisticated. Whether it's with skirt or shorts, skinny jeans or business trousers, wedges have long ago morphed from squarish uniform looking shoes to all-round companions for all of our outfits. From the traditional wedge pumps to high-class platform boots and lace-up shoes, wedge heels suit every kind of shoe – not to mention us.
Spring heralds in a plethora of changes: you've accepted a job offer from a small agency and are excitedly looking forward to your new work environment and all the new challenges it will bring. You walk into the office on one of the first mild, sunny March mornings to meet your new team. In a pair of velour ankle booties with black skinny jeans, a plain blouse and a V-neck jumper you immediately feel at ease among your new colleagues and are brought up to speed on the ongoing projects without much fuss. As you head home later that day, exhausted from your day and all the new impressions, but happy and inspired, you're absolutely certain you've taken the right decision. The time flies by with project tasks, planning and acquisition talks. In early May you and two colleagues have been entrusted for the first time with the concept planning for a new project. In smart high-leg leather boots, a dark stretch skirt and a short blazer you arrive at the client site, well prepared and highly motivated. And you do actually manage to convince the client with your coherent concept, and that evening you drink a toast to your success with your colleagues in the little bar around the corner.
Almost imperceptibly the summer has arrived and you're completely integrated in the team. It's a warm, slightly breezy morning as you set out on foot for a client meeting, airy and comfortable in a light pencil skirt, a stretch blouse and a pair of black ballerina shoes with low wedge heels. It's your final meeting before you treat yourself to a week's well-earned holiday.
From the first day of your holiday on you revel in your new-found freedom. A trip to the beach, a lazy afternoon in the park, an ice cream with your sister – you allow your soul to drift away and gather new energy. In an airy summer dress and a pair of playful strap-on wedges you're just strolling through the flea market with your best friend as you suddenly recognise an old friend at one of the stalls, whom you haven't seen since your school days. He's really pleased to see you and spontaneously invites you and your friend to his garden party on the weekend. Dressed smartly but casually in a feminine jersey wraparound dress and traditional wedges you spend a lovely evening outdoors – a nice reunion and the perfect end to your holiday.
Autumn arrives with a load of work. In a knitted dress and soft shiny platform boots you get to the office early – the plan is to develop an important project with a partner agency in a two-day workshop. The days are intensive and full of negotiations but finally the concept is ready and can be shown to the client right away. As you arrive home from the office on the evening of the second day in a formal black wool-mix skirt, blazer and suede boots you're tired but proud of your shared success. You take the next day for a long lie-in and to recover your strength. In a coated parka and ankle booties with profile soles you take a long walk through windy, rain-soaked streets to clear your head before stopping in somewhere for some hot chocolate: it's already getting dark by the time you head home. Slowly but surely the year is drawing to a close. In a pair of thickly lined velour lace-up wedges and a warm woollen coat you do your first Christmas shopping together with a friend. You take the whole afternoon to find something special for everyone and are looking forward to the coming holidays. On the last day of work before Christmas Eve you opt for comfortable style and wear a pair of lined natural leather booties with wedge heels with black treggings and an oversized cashmere jumper. Everyone at work is in a merry, festive mood, and the final few tasks are quickly dealt with. The first snow flakes are falling gently as you walk home through the brightly lit streets. It's going to be a wonderful Christmas – and it's already been a great year.
